Gary Hall

Boys Basketball • Baseball
Graduation Year: 1961

Gary Hall graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1961.

Thus ended the stellar basketball career of one of the school's all-time great basketball players and competitors. Gary's 1959-60 basketball was a precursor to a brilliant senior season. Gary was a first-team All Central Ohio League selection when the COL was considered one of the top high school leagues in Ohio. His opponents on the basketball floor honored him by making him a first team All-COL Opponents selection. He scored 352 points his junior season. The 1960-61 team became known as the "Magnificent Midgets" because their tallest starter was 6'1". This did not stop them from winning a COL title and a controversial one point District final loss to eventual state champions Portsmouth. Gary scored 463 points his senior season and became the fifth CHS player to score 400 or more points in a season. He made 100 of 124 free throws his junior year and 129 of 151 his senior season. He also sank an amazing 21 consecutive free throws. During the "Magnificents" tournament run, Gary scored 104 points. He was again selected All-COL and All-COL Opponents first team. He was an Ohio AP and UPI selection. Gary also excelled on the baseball diamond where his timely hit helped CHS reach the Regional Finals in 1959.

Tragically, 19 year old Gary Hall died of cancer on January 5, 1963. CHS lost one of its finest. His basketball and baseball coach, the late Dick Dolan commented: "You couldn't ask for a better kid for a coach to work with. He was somebody any youth in Chillicothe should always look up to. He was first class all the way."
