1925 CHS Graduate

Byron Eby graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1925. He excelled in both basketball and football.

In 1924, he led the CHS football team to a 6-2 record and co-championship of the South Central Ohio League. This championship was the first-ever league championship in the history of CHS football. Byron scored a total of 130 points, including 53 against Hillsboro alone when he scored 8 TDs and kicked 5 PATs in the 1924 game. The 8 TDs and 53 points are the all-time single game scoring records in CHS football.

In basketball, Byron was captain of the CHS team in 1923-24 and 1924-25, and was selected 1st Team All-Ohio in 1924-25.

Byron enrolled at The Ohio State University in 1925. He was selected 1st Team All-Western Conference in 1925, 1926 and 1927. One of his OSU teammates was Wes Fesler, the 3-time All-American and future head football coach at OSU. Byron scored the winning TD in the 1928 game against Michigan, and a memorable come from behind TD in 1928 to tie mighty Princeton University 6-6.

After OSU, Byron organized, coached and played for the Chillicothe Eagles, a local semi-pro football team which included the Portsmouth Spartons, which are now the NFL's Detroit Lions.

In 1959, Byron became the first Ross County Director of the Welfare Office. He also coached football at Gibsonville HS, Roseville HS, Murray City HS, Nelsonville HS, Union Furnace HS, and Frankfort HS. From 1981 until his death in 1990, Chillicothe HS honored Byron with a lifetime pass to all CHS athletic contests, and provided permanent seats at Herrnstein Field and on Media Row at Hatton Gym.
